Since I updated Safari to V16.4 I cannot see any images on Facebook as well as in Gmail where the men options cannot be seen. If I hover over the menu I can see the underlying text, but it’s not displayed.

Thank you - I have solved the issue - somehow I had inadvertently clicked on “Disable Images” under the Safari Develop menu.

Review all the suggestions in If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac - Apple Support.
No need to feel that way; some obscure website behaviors are addressed by enabling certain "experimental" features. It's always good to know how to reset them to defaults.
Safari since today (April 04, 2023) not showing images on facebook NOR on Gmail!!
