time machine access

On a 2022 iMac 24" I can perform Time machine backups to an external drive but attempting to "open" Time machine to view it results in a Black square blowing most of the screen and a complete freeze of the computer. Had same result on last machine, a 27" iMac. File migration must have taken problem to new iMac. Any ideas?

Do you have multiple displays?

I can’t remember if the “Displays have separate spaces“ setting affects it, but perhaps.

It is a decades old problem. I would just disconnect one display when I needed to use Time Machine.
