Mac Mail: How To Remove Message Color in Inbox List

apologies if this is a recycled topic, but i've still not been able to find an answer...

using Ventura 13.3 and looking for a way to reset the color of messages that i added a color to.

note: i'm NOT referring to the body background or text of an email.

when viewing an Inbox/folder list of messages, i started adding colors (both background and text color) for items that a simple Flag would not suffice.

this is done by selecting a message(s) and going to the Format menu & choosing the Show Colors option. or if you have put Colors in your toolbar. or if you've created a Rule to add colors to messages.

i've just discovered that there is NO way (that i've found) to revert/undo/reset/remove these colors!!!

the only semi-solution (which isn't really a solution) is to reselect the message(s) and choose a color that closely matches the background of the list/message viewer. it's been said that those who use LIGHT MODE should choose Snow and those who use DARK MODE should choose Licorice.

BUT, at least to my eyes & screens, these do not fully match. plus, for me using Dark mode, choosing a dark color for some reason hides/removes the faint line between messages.

so i'm putting this out there again, hoping somebody's found a way to do this. perhaps an Automator service or Applescript? or a third party app/plugin?

it would be nice to be able to continue using colors, but there needs to be a (simple/quick) way to remove the colors individually when needed.

No, the issue I'm referring to is the 'set colour of message' 'of text' in the mail rules (which I run on demand from the Message menu):

Which works during that same instance of mail - ie until I quit and restart mail - at which point the same rule looks like this:

I have tried turning off the syncing of mail preferences to iCloud as my other Mac is still on Monterey, but that hasn't changed this behaviour. The rule doesn't stick.

I gather that there are bugs relating to Mail rules in Ventura - but don't know how to add my voice to the reporting of them!

Sorry, I haven't got an answer - but I'm trying to do exactly that without success (yet!)

I have Keyboard Maestro and Smallcubed Mailtags (the MailAct-On bit of Mailsuite didn't play nicely with Keyboard Maestro so I uninstalled that bit) - and still haven't found a way to remove a color (or even set the color to any other color) after it was applied by a rule.

I'll keep trying - and watching this thread to see if anyone has any solution - but fundamentally it comes down to mail.app not (?yet) being as scriptable as I need it to be.

SIDENOTE RE: MailSuite

i've used "MailTags" for years. it has a way to add color & remove color to messages in the message list. but i did not renew it this year because they told me they will not be continuing on with MailSuites soon, as their architecture for it will not be compatible with future macOS versions. so they're creating their own email app with the MailSuite options built-in.

Thank you - useful info... shame I just renewed my MailSuite after a several year hiatus! I'm in an email conversation with SmallCubed support at the moment as Mail Act-on just won't play with mail in Ventura (so I uninstalled the Act-on bit and just use the tags). Colouring with tags puts too much colour on the screen for me though - I want *only* the text colour to change in the message list. If only mail app were more scriptable...
