problems with email sync (NOT iCloud): Monterey and iOS

I'm having problems with email sync, and Mac Mail in general, since updating to 12.6.4 (from 12.6.2). iOS is on 16.3.1. I do not use iCloud and have it disabled on both devices.


I did not have any problems before this software update.


My MBP Mac Mail is sometimes not loading emails at all and often loading email content at a snail's pace. (All emails show up promptly and completely on iOS and on browsers.) I need to force-quit Mail constantly to get it to load anything.


Additionally, email is no longer syncing between Mac Mail and iOS which is driving me nuts. I have browsed the forums and haven't found a solution that applies to me. Thanks all.

Thanks tbirdvet. Many calls to Apple tech support later...all their usual suggestions had no effect, including creating a new user, safe mode, rebuilding mailboxes, reinstalling Monterey, and updating to Ventura.


What DID work, at least for now, is deleting all the email accounts and adding them back. This took several hours and the reindex is still going on several hours after that. But my mailboxes and sync are behaving quite normally now.


According to the tech support at one of my IMAP email accounts (not Apple): "We would like to acknowledge that the recent update of the Mac Mail is facing issues in loading and syncing the emails fetched through the IMAP protocol. This would occur for the OS version v12.1 and above."


So this is a recognized issue.


I am noticing that even now that it's working ok, the IMAP load & sync is still somewhat slow and temperamental. So I don't think this problem is permanently solved. Good for now though. Hoping a software update for Mail will fix this.
