Safari Update

I have a mid-2009 iMac running v.10.13.6/High Sierra. Some of my websites are telling me I need to update my Safari browser. There are no software updates available. What do I do?

Thank you

Nearly all websites use some kind of encryption for data transfer, but that encryption can use a number of different techniques. The Safari version incorporated in High Sierra has not been updated for years, so it will be unable to keep up with websites requiring more recent security protocols. For more on the subject read about Digital certificates and encrypted websites in Safari on Mac - Apple Support and the link within it Avoid fraud by using encrypted websites in Safari on Mac - Apple Support.

Not all websites require encryption, example: http://www.bitsavers.org/ is not encrypted because there is no compelling reason for it to require encryption. Conversely however there are no compelling reasons to not use encryption — unless of course your intended audience only has old equipment that can't cope with more recent protocols.
