my mac is not updating software

my mac is very slow, its a 10.11.16 of os x el capitan.

how do i update it

mac not updating os software I have an iMac 21.5 in late 2015 running macOS Big Sur 11.6.5. It will not update os software. I have left it overnight looking for updates and it just gives me the wheel of death hours later. I see that there are updates since then, but I can't get them.
