Import 4k 10bit video in iPad Pro photos app not working

The new iPad Pro 12.9' with M2 chip claims to support 4k videos, 10bit and even ProRes codec.

I would like to import 4k 10bit 30p videos, taken with the Panasonic GH5 camera, into the photos app from the new iPad Pro 12 inch, M2 chip. The import is not possible (red exclamation mark). Why is the import not working?

The videos are recorded in H264 4k 10bit 4:2:2 30p.

On an Apple MacBook Pro M1 chip, they can be imported without problems.

Does this mean that photo app on IOS devices cannot handle 4k 10bit videos?

It seems that the photos App of the iPhone/iPad is not capable to handle 10 bit videos. This seems to be a problem with iOS as on the Mac notebook it works. This is rather disappointing.

Hi ChrisMatr,

Got it. If the camera in question does not appear in the compatibility list and you're only able to open the videos through a third-party app in Files, this does sound likely to be compatibility related. Greetings ChrisMatr,

To import photos from your camera to your iPad, you'll need to complete these steps:

"To import from your SD card or digital camera, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the adapter to your iOS device.
  2. Connect your digital camera to the adapter by USB or insert an SD card.
  3. Photos should automatically open to the Import tab. If it doesn't, open Photos and tap Import.
  4. Tap Import All to import your content, or tap specific items, then tap Import.
  5. When the import is complete, you might be asked to Keep or Delete the media on the camera or SD card.

You can import content only to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can't export content to an SD card or digital camera." Import photos using Apple camera adapters

According to that resource, "Apple camera adapters can import multiple types of media files from your digital camera or SD card. If the format isn't compatible with iOS, you won’t be able to view them on your device, but can import them to your computer later.

Apple camera adapters can import only content that was captured by digital cameras. You might not be able to import content that was renamed, edited, or copied to the digital camera or SD card."

Be sure to visit the links to see the supported SD cards and image-transfers protocol.

We hope this helps!

Sincerely.

Hi ChrisMatr,

Have you checked this list to make sure your specific camera is listed as compatible? We see a few Panasonic cameras listed with GH5 as part of the model identifier, so we recommend making sure your camera is compatible: Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura - Apple Support

If it's compatible, when you try importing, do you have the option to import to Files instead of Photos? If so, see if there's a difference when you try that.

If you verify your camera is compatible but are still unable to import to either Files or Photos, use this link to reach Apple directly: Apple Support

Take care.
