Voice dictation adding an apostrophe S to names

When I use voice dictation with someone’s name, it will add an apostrophe S every time. It’s super annoying and it doesn’t seem like Apple knows how to fix this. Does anyone know what I can do besides changing it and hoping my phone will “learn” the correct spelling.

Hi malpais03,

Thanks for the post. How long have you been having this issue with Dictation? Also, does it happen every time with every contact or name, or is it intermittent?

Also, which app are you using when this happens? Have you tested multiple apps, like Notes, Messages or Mail? This will help us narrow things down, as will the answers to the questions above.

As a start, we recommend updating your iPhone to iOS 16.4. Make sure to back up first: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Kind regards.

Hi, I had this problem using my son’s first name. After googling a few times, somebody mentioned contacts. I figured out dictation is pulling that name from my contacts, e.g. the contact name “Johnny’s mom Liz from baseball” . I would dictate “Johnny” in a message but the text would display “Johnny’s”. I went into my contacts, searched “Johnny’s” and edited all the contacts that had the apostrophe & s in the name so that the name doesn’t include it. I don’t know how to stop voice dictation from pulling the name from contacts so this was my work around. I hope this makes sense and can help fix your situation.

It happens every time. I use iMessage and click the mic icon to speak. I will say Milla or Marley and it will type Milla’s and Marley’s. I’ve clicked on the name to change it so it can “learn” the correct spelling, but it doesn’t “learn” anything. This has been going on for the better part of the year. iOS updates are being done every time a new updates come out.
