Why does a pop-up reminder state that "the most recent backup did not complete because your computer was running on battery" even though the computer was plugged into a power source?

Do you recall if you had a power outage, or check if the cable was properly plugged in and seated?
Additionally, if the initial backup failed, are you able to complete a backup now or does it still fail?

Having the same problem. Mac was plugged in during backup and it completed without error. The "The most recent backup did not complete because your computer was running on battery" message came up anyway 2 weeks later. I ran another backup at that point, no error, everything plugged in, not on battery. Error notification pops up again 14 days later. Seems only to show up when there's not been a backup for more than x number of days. The title of the error message is "No Backups for 14 days", followed by the "was running on battery" message. Seems unrelated to the actual state of the Mac or the success or failure of a backup....

To clarify your last message, did that alert only appear after you got the Mac back, or was it happening before?
Also, what was the issue with the Mac that required service? Knowing that will help work out if there could be some relation between the issues.

The same message appears every time I backup to my "passport for Mac". There has been no power outage and everything has been properly plugged in. I recently sent the laptop back to Apple with the help of a computer fixit shop. Apple told them to backup my info and when it was returned to them and they used the passport to install all my info, that message still appeared.

It was happening before. The issue it was sent to Apple for was in the keyboard (capital letters appeared at random, making typing passwords difficult).
