I am not sure how to change back the safari sidebar to the default setting , currently it is showing tab groups at the top of the screen , and bookmarks , reading list , shared with you and iCloud tabs at the bottom ??

I believe you are asking how to replace a missing Sidebar icon in Safari's Toolbar, which toggles between showing and hiding the Sidebar. Is that correct?
You can replace the Sidebar icon, or restore the entire default set of toolbar icons using Safari's View menu > Customize Toolbar...
That did the trick indeed . It was the sidebar tab / groups icon which I was missing . Was not aware I could customise the toolbar even further , but will be doing some additional tweaking .
