screenshot not saved to desktop

My screenshots are not saving to my desktop, and I cannot find them.

Press Shift-Cmd-5 to activate screenshots. Select Options at the bottom of the screen and then select the location for "Save to".

Why the screenshots I take don't get saved in the desktop rather I could only find it in the recent option from finder? Previously I was able to save a screenshot in the desktop but now a days ( recently ) for some reason the screenshots I take never gets saved and I can only find them in the recents option from finder. Suddenly I don't get a thumbnail when I take a screenshot, how do I get this feature back. I use Command Shift 4 to take a small screenshot, then a thumbnail appears in the lower right corner of the screen and I can right click that for a menu or drag it to another window. Suddenly this feature is gone and it opens a window and wants me to save the image as a file. I don't want to save it as a file, how to I get the thumbnail feature back?
