tvos 16.4 volume stopped working

Upgraded to tvOS 16.4 today and my HomePods as well. With HomePods connected, the volume up/down no longer works. When I connect to the HomePods, and select volume up or down when selecting which HomePods to connect to, I can see the slider move; however, when I watch an Apple purchased movie or TV show, nothing happens, and the sound remains the same.

Suggestions?

  • Reboot the wifi and are you using the same wifi for Apple TV & HomePods?
  • You can also factory reset HomePods but use the pressing the top method to clear all data, then you will need to set them up again. If this is with your iPhone, please update the software on that as well.

I do notice the slider will sort of bounce at times and appear not to be working. I sometimes go into control centre and select the AirPlay icon to get at the HomePods to adjust volume. Does this work?

Thank you for the reply.

I did a little more testing before proceeding with the latest recommendations and discovered:

  1. I can use the Apple TV remote to control the volume but ONLY in the Music app.
  2. Whenever I start a movie or TV show or anything else (e.g. YouTube), pressing the volume up or down blinks the light on the Apple TV device, but there is no change in the volume.
  3. Don't know if this is a change by design or an unintentional mishap, but I do know that everything appears to be set up correctly with permission to use the volume only allowed when listening to music and not as previously whereby movies and TV shows could be listened through through HomePods.

FYI, I find that my 1st-gen ATV4K (v16.4) correctly adjusts a stereo pair of HomePod minis (v16.4) when they're selected as the only speakers in use. When using the HomePods as additional speakers, the Siri Remote only adjusts the 'default speakers' (a Soundbar under the TV). I can then adjust the HomePods' volume via the Control Center's AirPlay speaker selection option - if you highlight the HomePods (or a specific AirPlay speaker in use), the Siri Remote does in fact adjust their volume. IOW, works as designed... not an obvious new bug.

I expect @Vancouver22's 'Restart everything' suggestion will set you right.

Did everything outlined above and no change. Interestingly, I can change the volume using the app on my iPhone locked screen that shows what is playing (I could do this yesterday as well), but not with the Apple TV remote.

I found articles whereas others posted this same issue in 2021 and 2022.

BTW, I also reset the Apple TV to factory settings and no change. Everything worked fine until I upgraded to 16.4

I tested the YouTube & Apple TV Apps and mine works. (I’m using 2 HomePod 2nd Gen and ATV4k (2021). This one also has ARC setting applied which your model does not support. I will test on my other model for those apps, but it worked on Netflix last night. EDIT: I tested on my ATV4K 1st Gen with HomePod minis and it works also. I am using default audio setting for HomePods on both models

How does it work if not using HomePods?

You have the ATV HD model correct? So you can’t add HomePods as default audio as can be done with the ATV4k models
