If the reply field is missing from the threads in messages you can first try quitting and reopening the Messages app.
1. To quit the app, open the App Switcher, swipe right to find the app, then swipe up on the app.
2. To reopen the app, go to the Home Screen (or App Library), then tap the app.

If that doesn't help, you'll want to cover the basics like restarting and updating the device.
