Separating iPhones from shared Apple ID

My wife and two children have each an iPhone but share one Apple ID. I would like each child to move to a unique Apple ID without a loss of content on their devices, after which we will set up family sharing for access to prior purchases and an iCloud+ account for future backups.

Note: at this time, these three phones are not connected to iCloud photos or backup (they are each backed up to iTunes on a PC) so I don’t believe iCloud will factor into making this change.

I would appreciate confirmation of my understanding that these steps will accomplish that goal:

1) Create two new Apple IDs from PC at applied.apple.com

2) Each child will sign out of each iphone. Photos and contacts will remain on each phone (again, these are not on iCloud), but shared purchases from the original Apple ID won’t be accessible

3) Each child will sign in using one of the new Apple IDs. Each phone will have maintained the photos and contacts that were on the device.

4) None of the above will impact my wife’s iphone (with the original Apple ID, which she will keep)

5) My wife will set up family sharing and an icloud+ account for all three iphones

It feels straightforward but I’m sensitive to potential data loss so I appreciate any correction if I’m mistaken.

Read the links below for things you may need to do to transfer as much as is possible and to share some others. It sound much like what you plan on doing.

Apps and media bought with one ID are permanently associated with that ID. Look into using Family Sharing to continue to be able to use items purchased with one Apple ID with other Apple IDs, and for some data sharing features.

If you have signed into the first ID on a device then fortunately when you sign out of that ID, do not erase the device, then sign in with a different ID, it asks you in most cases if you wish to merge the data from the two IDs on your device. Say yes and later delete individual items from the other ID that you do not want. Note, in How to save apps and progress on one Appl… - Apple Community a Community Specialist says, "you will not be able to transfer the meta data from one Apple ID to another. Once you switch to another Apple ID the information associated with the old Apple ID will be gone except for physical content on the device like photos and videos."

If another Apple ID is signed in you may need to enter the password for that ID to sign out of that ID first.
