Device has old id and wont recognize my new id and password

Found kids old ipod and updated it, now its asking for activation lock id and password but it is referencing an old id that doesn’t exist anymore. It will not take my new id and now stuck on activation lock and can’t go further. It contains some old family pics so would like it left intact if possible. Any suggestions?
