DNS name resolution stops working after a while on MacOS 12.6.3

The problem started after I upgraded to MacOS 12.6.

DNS name resolution stops working after a while on MacOS12.6.3, regardless of which DNS server I configure, and regardless of network. If I change networks or reboot it temporarily starts working again but then stops resolving names again. I think it is a local DNS cache management problem, but it is a bit over my head.

Lots and lots of people are reporting this problem. What is the solution?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.6

Thanks for reaching out.

What kind of problem would:

1) Affect only my MacBook, not any other of many devices on the same router?

2) Not improve when I choose different DNS settings in my MacBook network preferences?

3) Temporarily resolve if I switch from one WiFi network to a different one on the same router, but then recur?

4) Temporarily resolve if I reboot my MacBook, but then recur?

Hello UnfrozenCavemanMD,

We understand you have some issues with your DNS settings working on your MacBook Air after updating your macOS. We have some suggestions to narrow down the issue, then will provide guidance going forward. First, here is our guide to changing your DNS settings on your Mac: Change DNS settings in Network preferences on Mac - Apple Support

You might test for the issue while booted to safe mode. That can rule out startup or login items that might be causing the problem: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

We also recommend creating a test user profile on your Mac, logging in to it to test for the same issue. This will rule out something specific to your user profile causing the problem.

Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

Finally, if you still aren't able to get your DNS settings to work as expected, you may need to reach out to your ISP. There could be something with your router or model that needs to be checked.

Take care.
