how to burn a DVD using the USB SuperDrive

I can't seem to figure this out. I have a DVD that is my own and it was recorded in 1988. How do I get the DVD on my computer as a video file and then be able to eject it from the SuperDrive player so that I can insert a blank disk to burn a copy onto?

The SuperDrive will play a DVD with no problems.

Wondering which computer / model (year) you are using,

and

which Operating System version is installed.

Re: "How do I get the DVD on my computer as a video file"

In general, you can often double click on a disk icon as soon as it appears on the desktop, to open a menu that will allow you to choose to view the DVD's contents.

(NB: If an app should open and begin playing the video, you can (watch or) quit the app when you want, and the icon should be available on the desktop.)

Then from the folder that opens, it is generally just a matter of dragging the video file to the desktop, and waiting for computer to duplicate it. (You may see a progress bar)

Re: "then be able to eject it from the SuperDrive player"

Once the computer has completed copying the video-file, close the folder you opened. The DVD should eject as normal, as nothing on it is in use.

You may want to create a "burn" folder to help burn the contents to a DVD disc:

NB: For accurate info:

Choose your OS version at the top of this article, if you are not using Ventura OS:

All the best :-)

Re: "I get an error saying the folder is empty".

Seems Universal Disk Format (UDF) replaced the old standard IS0 9660

The UDF may need to be unzipped in order to access the file

Wondering if the video on the DVD would open in QuickTime.

If so, you could choose File > Export and get a file on the desktop, ready to burn.

I'm running a 2017 iMac 27" 5k desktop with the current Ventura OS. I should be getting a new laptop delivered today, just fyi.

The DVD that I'm trying to copy is a DVD-R . Even though I am the admin and owner of the disk, I cannot write to it, since it's read-only...just throwing that out there. I'm not trying to change it in any way, just wanting to make a copy for relatives. I used to do this back in the day with 2 Video Recorders...yes I'm dating myself, lol.

The odd thing is how the name of the disk appears on the desktop after inserting it into the SuperDrive. The name says: DVD_Video_Recorder_#83F2. I did not name it as such. When I right click on the name to Get Info, it shows Kind as Volume, the Format as Universal Disk Format (UDF), Capacity, 2.26GB, Available Zero bytes.

When the disk is inserted, it starts playing the video. I close it out and the DVD icon is still there on my desktop. However, when double-clicking the icon it opens up a blank window, basically, no folder icon, no video files within the window, just the header with that name DVD_Video_Recorder_#83F2.

I tried using a 3rd party app (burn) to drag the icon, so that it would make a copy of the DVD contents, and then be able to eject said DVD so that I could insert a blank DVD into the SuperDrive, BUT I get an error saying the folder is empty.

After burning data to a DVD-R or DVD+R, you typically close the session and finish the disk, which is why the DVD is read-only. When you want to duplicate a DVD using just one drive, you need to create a disk image of the source DVD and save it to the hard drive. That creates the snapshot needed to burn an exact duplicate. The app you're using to burn should provide you with the option to burn a DVD from an image file. When you select the image that you saved, the duplicated disk should be identical to the original.
