When I use the export to gif function (from a "looped" Live Photo) either from photos or Keynote I get a file that contains a whole series, 30+, of still images each labeled "GIF Image" but not an actual GIF. Do I have some system setting that is incorrect, or what is the problem?
How are you viewing the exported file? Preview will show the individual images that compose a gif. It seems that is what you are seeing.
Select the file in thd Finder and press tge space bar to activate Quicklook.

This is what I have been doing, following that exact procedure. But, once I hit the export as GIF option what I get is not a GIF but an Image file that is nothing but a series of stills each labeled .GIF.
When I tested I got the gif name at the top of the thumbnails and each image was just numbered from 1 to 40 as per image below:
Double click on the Live Photo to open it:
Click edit top right:
Click loop bottom left:
Click Done, top right:
then export:
That is precisely what I was doing wrong, trying to view the downloaded file in preview. I found if I used it elsewhere or posted it online it worked as a GIF. Thanks, everyone for all the help,
