i connected my apple watch to a phone that a later broke and replaced, my new phone uses a separate apple ID, i cannot remember my old password so i can’t connect my watch to my new phone, is there anything i can do to get around this?

Apply to recover your old ID password.
It is very strange thing to do to set up your new phone with a new ID. You lose all your old iCloud assets.
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
Then remove the Watch from your account it https://icloud.com/find
