FWIW, I wasn't even aware what you describe was possible. However, it does work for me with Ventura and Monterey. Not sure why it stopped for you.
Try booting into Safe Mode then restart normally. That will sometimes fix anomalies.

Is there a trackpad involved, make changes and compare your results...

Make sure that Sort By is set to none.
