Mac mini hard drive used as a backup disk/drive

I have a new MacBook Air and would like to set up my old mini (Mid 2011 model with 500GB drive/4GBMemory) to act as a backup drive using Time Machine. I have wiped it clean and an reinstalling High Sierra, but I'm not sure that this mini , if it doesn't match the MBAir's OS (using Ventura), how it would perform(or not) as a backup drive. Can you help with this problem? Much appreciated!

It is possible to set up a Mac as a destination for a Time Machine backup. I've never done that myself, but there is documentation from Apple for that configuration.

You should note, however, that your mini has only a 500GB internal drive. Ideally your backup drive should be 2-3 times the total capacity of the drive(s) you wish to backup.
