Burning a DVD that can be viewed on a TV

I burned a .mov video from my MacBook Pro to DVD. It plays fine when using an external DVD player connected to other MacBooks, but will not play on the DVD player connected to my TV. Do I need to convert the .mov file to another format before burning it? If so, what format is needed, and do I need another app to convert the file?

when I want to burn a DVD that will work in a stand alone DVD player, I use the free app Burn. it works good enough for my needs. and when you add videos to be burned, it will offer to convert those files for you into the correct format.

but if you need to use it in a professional application, you may want to look at the paid Roxio Toast 20 for added functionality.
