Deleted messages keep coming back on imac

I've researched this topic and found all sorts of suggestions but nothing seems to work. I delete messages on all my devices (iphone, ipad and imac) and they just keep reappearing. Tried turning icloud off and turning it on and rebooting in safe mode and a bunch of other things. Nothing seems to work
