Family sharing

I have my Apple TV + subscription set to share with my family but they’re not able to access it. Does it only work if you have purchase sharing on?

Hi ginnifer49,

You shouldn't need to have purchase sharing enabled to share your Apple TV+ subscription with your Family Sharing group. We use Family Sharing to share several Apple subscriptions without enabling purchase sharing every day.

Note the "Which payment method is charged for purchases that family members make?" section of this Apple Support article for confirmation: How to share purchases with your family - Apple Support

"If you're the family organizer and you don't want to share a payment method with your family, turn off purchase sharing. When purchase sharing is turned off, you can continue to share subscriptions like Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade. When Purchase Sharing is turned off, everyone must use their own payment method."

With that in mind, based on your screenshots, your Family Sharing members should be able to enjoy your Apple TV+ subscription. Let's check in your Family Sharing settings with these steps to confirm their access.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Family.
  3. Tap on the name of a person in your Family that cannot see Apple TV+ from their device(s).
  4. Tap Subscriptions.

Is Apple TV+ listed for them in Subscriptions here? If it is, it's time to contact Apple Support.

Warmest Regards.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

If you're having trouble sharing your Apple TV subscription to your family, you'll want to follow the steps listed in here to ensure that everything is set up correctly: Set up Family Sharing in the Apple TV app - Apple Support

Hey there ginnifer49,

Thanks for keeping us updated and for confirming that you've already properly set up your subscription to be shared. If your family members are not able to access or find that shared content, then have them review the following resource here: If you can't find your family's shared content - Apple Support

On your iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later
1. Go to Settings > Family.
2. Tap your name.
3. Make a note of which Apple ID is listed.
4. Tap Purchases.
5. Tap Apple ID for Purchases and make sure that you're signed in with with the same Apple ID that you use for Family Sharing. If not, tap Share using secondary Apple ID and enter the Apple ID and password for that Apple ID.

Just in case, there are more steps listed under "If you still can't find shared content" in the resource we shared with you.

You might also want to make sure that everyone's device is fully updated. This can usually help with unique issues, since updates include fixes. Just in case, this link can guide you through the update process: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

1.)Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2.)Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3.)Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4.) If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
5.) Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

We hope these steps help you out. If you continue to experience issues, you might want to reach out to Apple Support for assistance. Use the following link to reach them: Get Support

Take care!
