My MacBook Pro has a startup message and folder with a question mark on my black screen

I left my macbook on last night and woke up this morning to support.apple.com/mac/startup message and folder with a question mark on my black screen. I tried running disk utility and nothing happened. not sure what to do next :(

Please refer to, and follow the steps outlined in If your Mac starts up to a question mark, which indicates "A folder with a flashing question mark means that your startup disk is no longer available or doesn't contain a working Mac operating system."
