Mail app keeps rebuilding and clogging incoming message flow

When I open Mail after my iMac is turned on the application starts rebuilding the mail database without my instruction. As I write this it says "Downloading Messages 15,059 of 60,477". New mail comes in, but slowly, apparently delayed by the unnecessary rebuilding. this has been going on for several weeks. Everything is normal on my iPhone and iPad, so it's just the iMac. Using MacOS Ventura 13.2.1

Hi there BlueRidgeObserver,

If you are getting this message once you open the Mail app, does the "Downloading Messages" prompt ever progress or does the number stay in the same place for some time? That will help us isolate if a specific message is causing this to occur.

If the progress bar completes and this continues to occur, then let's follow the steps outlined here next since they can resolved unexpected behavior like this: If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac

If you are still having issues, please provide more details on the account or accounts that you are using with the Mail app on your Mac so that we can continue to assist.

Cheers!
