macOS Ventura no longer detects external monitors?!

For years I've used an Anker USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect my iMac Pro to an external monitor or a projector.

This no longer works in Ventura.

I even bought a new 8K USB-C to HDMI cable and it still doesn't work.

System Settings > Displays shows only crappy AirPort connections in the dropdown menu. No HDMI options ever appear, and I've tried three viable displays. And no, unhiding the Detect Displays button does nothing. Restarts don't help either.

What is going on? Was this a showstopper bug that still hasn't been fixed in 13.2.1?

I broke down and bought the ugly $69 Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and now it works again with my old HDMI cable.

So basically in Ventura, Apple has sabotaged third-party HDMI adapters, forcing us to buy theirs.

It’s not clear why Apple’s adapter costs 3X more. Does it even have a chip in it that does some fancy conversion? Is that why a simple USB-C to HDMI cable stupidly doesn’t work?
