Significance of dim, very dim, third LED indicator on iMac logic board

I replaced the logic board on an iMac 27" 5K Retina Late-2015 with a pre-owned board from the very same iMac model.

No problems with the install.

Before attaching the screen, I powered up the iMac to make sure everything was working.

Sure enough, the fan started and I heard the startup chime.

And the first three LED indicators on the logic board were illuminated.

Or were they?

The first two LEDs shone brightly as expected, but the third (which indicates communication between the GPU and the computer) was much dimmer.

Shut down, started up again and same thing -- a very dim third LED indicator.

Hooked up the screen and restarted.

Nothing on the screen.

Started up again.

This time the screen showed some activity (I had also replaced the HDD with an SSD without the OS).

Lifted the screen slightly away from the body and saw all four LEDs glowing brightly.

However, subsequent start up attempts showed no screen activity and a return of the dim third LED.

I had understood the the indicator LED are either ON or OFF, but not half-on.

I can find no references to a dim third LED on an iMac although there are quite a few mentions of a dim fourth LED.

Has anybody else had a similar experience and can help me understand the significance of this?

Thanks

Step 25 How to find and read the Diagnostic LEDs

  • Do not touch the power supply. Be very careful not to touch the capacitor leads or any exposed solder joints on the back of the power supply (boxed in red).
  • boxed in orange, are diagnostic LEDs
  • LED 1 - Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply is detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON while the iMac is connected to the AC power. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if the AC power is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.
  • LED 2 - Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.
  • LED 3 - Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.
  • LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

Apple would just remove the link to this info.:(

Hi BDAqua

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I was aware of this list explaining what each LED indicates.

However, my problem is a little more complicated.

The list you posted suggests that each LED has only two states; it's either ON or it's OFF.

In my case, when I power up the Mac, the first two LEDs shine brightly but the third is neither on nor off.

It's certainly not off as there is a faint glow from it, no more than 20% of the luminosity of the first two LEDs, and it's certainly not fully on as it's nowhere near as bright as the first two.

So what does this mean?

Is the GPU still actually communicating with "the computer" but in a more timid and withdrawn manner?

If so, is the fault with the GPU or with the part of "the computer" with which it is trying to communicate?

Note that under these circumstances, when the display is attached, the fourth LED does not light up at all and nothing appears on the screen.

Nevertheless, on at least two occasions, when the screen did activate on power up, all four LEDs, including the third, did light up brightly as would be expected for a properly functioning iMac.

Have you or anybody else experienced this dimmed LED phenomenon and can explain its significance?

Thanks for that long-shot suggestion.

Sounds like a variant of the SMC reset which I had already tried.

Anyway, had a go at your suggestion, and unfortunately, no dice.

Your comment about one or more bad caps on the logic board is a real possibility.

I didn't notice any bulging caps on the "far side" of the board before I installed it.

However, I know that there are a lot of tiny capacitors on the near (visible) side of the board.

Even if any of these were defective, I have neither the competence nor the tools to identify and swap them out.

To give an idea of how faint is the luminosity of the third LED, when the MAC is powered on with the screen detached and out of the way, looking at the board from, say, two metres away, you would think only the first two LEDs are illuminated.

However, on looking closer, it's possible to see a faint green light at the very center of the LED.

My own feeling is that the GPU on the board was "dying" when I received it as initially, but only intermittently, all four LEDs lit up and there was activity on the screen.

However, even this "activity" was short lived as after a minute or so, the image on the screen moved to the right and shortly thereafter the computer shut down.

Now, I don't even get that.

Just the first two LEDs glowing brightly with the third as described above.

Thanks but what puzzles me is that I can find no reference online to the phenomenon of a dimmed or faintly glimmering third LED on an iMac logic board.

None at all.

And even on this forum and two others where I posted a similar question, nobody has reported seeing this.

Strange.

But, then again, weird things happen to me.

FYI, some later iMacs will have a dim LED as part of the sequence (2020), but this is not supposed to happen with a 2015 model.

I came across a slightly different reference for the 2015 model which mentions if the 3rd LED is not lit, then check the CMOS/PRAM battery on the back side of the board. There are pads on the Logic Board for checking the battery's voltage, and a set of pads for resetting the RTC (real time clock, iMac needs to be unplugged, and left to sit for two minutes to drain the power supply before shorting the RTC contacts). Location varies between the two different 2015 models (Mid and Late). I doubt this is the problem with the dim LED#3, but it is the only thing to try since the GPU is integrated into the Logic Board, so no matter what a Logic Board failure seems most likely.
