Problems with Text Messages

I used to receive the same text messages on my iPhone and my iMac. Somehow that link has been broken. I now only seem to get my text messages on my iPhone. What settings on my iMac and my iPhone should I examine?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

Mac OS 12.6.3

iPhone 12 mini

iOS 16.3.1

iMac 27″, macOS 12.6

Results from experimenting and a recap:

  • I can send and receive blue and green messages through my iPhone.

  • I can only send and receive blue messages through my iMac

  • As mentioned before, if I send a green message through my iMac, the outgoing message shows up on my iMac and my iPhone. The message is then marked as "Not Delivered" on my iMac. Replies are received by my iPhone, but not my iMac.

  • Side Note 1: If the "Message" app has nothing to do with iCloud, why does it show up on the iPhone under "Apps Using iCloud"?

  • Side Note 2: Is it possible that this had something to do with my recent upgrades of iOS and Monterey OS?

Thanks again and best regards,

Fred

Hi JS,

Thanks, but that didn't solve the problem. Here are some more clues that I've recently discovered:

  • I can exchange text messages with my wife with no problems at all. I can use either iMac or iPhone and outgoing and incoming messages show up on both. (We have identical phones and use the same ISP, AOL)

  • If I try to send a message to others using my iPhone, the message shows up on my iMac, but then says that it is "Not Delivered". Similarly, if I try to send a text message to others using my iMac, it comes back as "Not Delivered".

Could this be an iCloud problem or possibly some incompatibility problem with Android phones?

Best regards,

Fred

Check that your Messages app on your Mac is signed in to your Apple ID.

Open Messages on your Mac, tap

MessagesSettingsiMessages. If you can see your Apple ID at the top, you are signed in

Also check if Text Message Forwarding is activated on your iPhone:

Go to SettingsMessagesText Message Forwarding → activate your Mac.

If your Mac is already enabled, try disabling, then restart both your Mac and your iPhone and activate again.

Okay, it doesn't sound like Text Forwardin is the problem and since the messages you are trying to send appear on your Mac, the problem is not the connection between your Mac and iPhone.

🔵 iMessage are the blue messages that can be sent between Apple devices, via data

🟢 Text are the green messages that are sent to Android, or iPhones if they have not activated iMessages.

You can send iMessages (the blue messages) to your wife from both your Mac and your iPhone without problems - and you can also receive iMessages on both devices, is that correct?

So it's the green text messages you can't send?

Can you send normal Text Messages from your iPhone or do you also get an error there?

Text Messages are sent through your Carrier, and as such have nothing to do with iCloud. So if that is the case, you must contact your Carrier.

Okay, so we can boil it down to the fact that you can't send normal Text Messages from your Mac.

Reply to Side Note 1: Message uses iCloud to back up your messages. Not for sending Text Messages, that's what is meant by Messages using iCloud. You can say, however, that in order for your Mac to send text messages from your Mac, your iPhone and Mac must be under the same Apple ID, therefore also iCloud. But I don't think it's iCloud because it works fine on my Mac.

Reply to Side Note 2: Possibly. Montery is not the latest MacOS version, but it should still work.

But the problem is Text Forwarding. When you send a green text message from your Mac, it is actually sent from your iPhone, and it is the connection that needs to be fixed.

Try this, on your iPhone go to:

SettingsMessagesText Message Forwarding, disable your Mac.

On your Mac, open Messages, choose Settings/Preferences, tap iMessages, and Sign Out. So your Mac is not receiving messages. Then restart your Mac, and your iPhone, again.

Open Settings in Messages on your Mac again and sign in with your Apple ID. Once you're logged in, notice if your iPhone asks if you want to enable Text Forwarding to your Mac. If it doesn't ask, go in and activate your Mac in SettingsMessagesText Message Forwarding

Sometimes the problems work themselves out, and it's great when they do.

Velbekommen 😁
