Try iOS device not showing in iTunes for Windows - Apple Community. Despite the title the same steps can help with older devices. Note that iPod classic isn't supposed to show in the list of associated devices that you can find online.

Have you tried another cable? Does the iPod show up in Windows Explorer if you put it in disk mode? If you've installed iTunes from the Microsoft Store you may find it helps to remove that version and reinstall using an iTunes64Setup.exe installer downloaded from apple.com.

:) ok, this is an odd one. When I tried that with navigating to program files.... it wouldn't accept the stated file in the drivers folder. So I tried it in program files x86/././drivers...but there wasn't the stated file in there.
Hi turingtest2,
thanks, but I've tried just about everything I can on there too. apart from updating the ipod, because I can't obviously, and updating windows because it does it automatically!
The ipod shows up in explorer ok just by plugging it in...I installed itunes ages ago from apple.com I think...not actually sure but certainly not from microsoft store.
OK. Try explicitly updating the device driver as outlined in the user tip. The key is do it even when Windows says you're already using the best driver etc.

I haven't tried unistalling itunes and reinstalling it. That might be the answer as I feel itunes is the issue here rather than any windows problem (makes a change!)
Worth a shot.
