Can the external backup devise be left plugged on or do I have to eject it and unplugged every time I switch off my iMac?

My external backup devise is a ONE TOUCH Seagate

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

What others have said. When you shutdown or restart your Mac, it politely unmounts the external backup drive, and then remounts it on the power-up/reboot sequence.

It can be left plugged in.

Yes you can leave the Seagate connected to the iMac.
