Unfortunately this is something that is not currently supported. The iPhone just became a usable external camera for the Mac.
I have wanted this feature (iPad camera use) for a while now, as I use the MacMini and have an external display without a native camera.
Here is a link for an accessory to use with your iPhone for an external camera! (NOTE you might be able to attach the accessory to your iPad, if your setup works better that way! If that's the case, look for the mount that is better suited for a MacBook...because the iPad is thinner than a desktop mount)
