I have an iPhone 12 mini with a traditional silicon case (no pockets on the back). Will a MagSafe Battery attach, or do I need to get a mag disc case?

If you have an Apple silicon case, those support Magsafe attachments. You don't need any other specific case.

No Apple cases have pockets. The pockets you see, are likely the Magsafe Wallet attachment. It's separate from the case.
