Hello Jeff_W.
Please remove your answer, as it is simply wrong. There are multiple copies of it all over Apple's community forum already. The advice provided does NOT work. If it did, I wouldn't have asked the question (again).
All this does is add to the mounting frustration of those, like myself, who come here seeking answers that are actually helpful.
In the future, please refrain from posting replies to questions unless you have verified and tested them yourself prior to answering. Simply parroting the incorrect information that others have already shared is not helpful.
After spending over an hour with Apple tech support, the truth is that there is NO way to remove multiple images from a particular messages thread at one time. They can only be removed individually, an incredibly tedious and impractical approach when one is dealing with hundreds of images in a thread, and possibly hundreds of threads as well.
There are also no details in the link you shared, rather it is badly written support information that only creates as many questions as it answers.
Ultimately, the only answer to this question is that there is simply is NO way to accomplish this, and it is suggested that users provide Apple with feedback requesting the features referred to above, as they currently are NOT provided at this time.
An answer that provides an accurate indication of the current state of affairs can, at the very least, let people know that doing this is not possible, saving them time, rather than encouraging them to spend hours looking for a solution which does not exist (as I did) because it gives the inaccurate impression that one should be somehow able to do this.
