Is it possible to get more than 8 GB of storage on my 2009 iMac?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009)

Model Identifier: iMac10,1

Part Number: MB950xx/A, MC413xx/A

Latest compatible operating system: macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

I think you are asking about RAM, not disk storage.


Your 2009 iMac has 4 RAM slots. If it currently has 8GB RAM then there are two 4GB RAM DIMMS (occupying two of the slots) and there are two open slots. With your 2009 iMac, go to crucial.com and let it scan your Mac's RAM ... it will tell you exactly what RAM you can add to your iMac. You can go up to 16GB RAM in your model iMac.


Crucial is an excellent source and their prices are usually very competitive. OWC and B&H Photo are also excellent - just be careful to order the exact model # RAM that you need.


On the 2009 iMac models the memory compartment is behind a small panel on the bottom of the iMac. It is held in place by three small screws. OWC has a nice video showing how to open it and retrieve/insert the RAM DIMMS.
