Setting Up Apple Mail For Gmail

According to both what has happened, and what I’ve read in this forum, I’m required to manually configure Apple Mail on my iPhone 7 (iOS 15.7) to connect to and gather my Gmail messages.

I’ve carefully given the correct account type (imap.gmail.com), user name, server port (993), password, and so on, for incoming mail, and likewise for (smtp) outgoing mail. I’ve turned SSL on in the advanced tab as suggested as well. (i’ve found nothing in the way of required information about an IMAP path prefix so that has been left blank.)

Still, nothing works. I get any number of the typical error messages, both when verifying within Settings>Mail and when in the Mail app itself.

I’ve followed the suggestion to delete the account and reconfigure it. That has not helped.

It’s as though either the usual scenario of something Apple seeming as if it will work, but never quite actually doing so, or that Google specifically not wanting to play well with Apple for (stupid) reasons.

I’ve struggled with this for going onto two hours to no avail.

I confess that I’m at a complete loss.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My very first step was to click on the Google choice option for “automagic” configuration. That failed and failed and failed hard, with an error message to the effect that there was no internet connection — which, of course there was. That’s why, upon further research I went toward manual configuration, according to advice on this forum.
