Mac Mini or printer problem?

I use my 2007 Mac Mini (2,1 O/S 10.7.5 Lion) as a printing system backup. Worked fine with my Canon iP4600 inkjet until a code (1401) said the printhead was suddenly incompatible. Won't work with a new replacement printhead (same message: "incompatible"), and I don't know what's going on with either.

There were no comments from the Canon community (the printer has been "retired"); maybe someone here has some insights if my Mini is sending bogus messages? If so, what's the fix?

Thanks so much for your response. I reset the printer system, yet I still get "printhead is incompatible" service code when attempting to print. And it won't print anything, not a pdf or rtf. The printer says it's "in use," or "idle" or "ready" depending on status, but no joy. And a supply level check comes back "information not available," all of which suggests at least the Mini is okay. I'm wondering if I just got a faulty new printhead. Additional thoughts?
