Incorrect notifications from Find My iPhone about one of our devices

Hi-my husband and I have been sharing an apple id forever (i know....) He will randomly, and not often, get notifications from Find My iPhone that says: my iPhone was left behind. This device is no longer detected near you. It was last seen near xxx address. Which is his office address. But I have not been near his office in almost a week. It has sent him the same kind of notification about our home when I was out of town for a few days. It makes it look like I'm checking in on him-which I'm definitely not.

Hi Tcon123,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you and your husband share an Apple ID and are getting unwanted Find My notifications. We recommend creating a separate Apple ID and using Family Sharing to prevent unwanted Find My notifications. This article explains more about this: Set up Family Sharing on iPhone.

"Set up Family Sharing on iPhone

Family Sharing lets you and up to five other family members share access to Apple services, purchases, an iCloud storage plan, and more. You can even help locate each other’s missing devices.

One adult family member—the organizer—invites other family members to participate. When family members join, Family Sharing is set up on everyone’s devices automatically. The group then chooses which services and features they want to use and share.

Family Sharing is available on eligible devices. See the Apple Support article System requirements for iCloud.

Create a Family Sharing group

You only need to set up Family Sharing on one device. Then it’s available on all your devices that are signed in with the same Apple ID.

  1. Go to Settings  > [your name] > Family Sharing, then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Family Sharing group.
  2. Add one or more family members. When you add an adult family member, you can designate them as a parent or guardian. Learn about types of Family Sharing members.
  3. You can also add family members later. See Add a member to a Family Sharing group on iPhone.
  4. Tap a feature you want to set up for your Family Sharing group, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. To set up parental controls or Apple Cash for a child, tap their name, tap the feature, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  6. You can see what you’re sharing with your family and adjust sharing settings at any time.

To learn how to set up or join a Family Sharing group on all your devices, see the Apple Support article Set up Family Sharing.

What you can do with Family Sharing

With a Family Sharing group, you can set up or share the following:

Tip: You can use Family Checklist to see tips and suggestions for Family Sharing features. Go to Settings  > [your name] > Family Sharing, then tap Family Checklist."

If you'd like to create your own Apple ID, this article has the steps: How to create a new Apple ID.

Also, you can learn more about the Notify When Left Behind feature here: Set up and use Notify When Left Behind in the Find My app.

We hope this helps.

Take care.
