Files airdropped to my Mac Studio not found

I have a strange issue where I will try to airdrop a file to my Mac Studio and for it will seem to work (I can choose my Mac Studio from Airdrop and the Download folder will bounce in the Dock) but when I actually go to the Download folder the file can't be found anywhere. This has been happening since I first got the Studio June of 2022 but I never really got around to trying to figure out what the problem was until now. It doesn't matter what device is sending the file, I tried turning off and on Airdrop and Bluetooth, nothing changes. Currently running the latest OS.

[UPDATE] Just tried turning off Airdrop, rebooting, turning it back on, rebooting again and now when I try to Airdop, it just fails. I get a notification on my Mac Studio that the attempt failed though.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can do?

[UPDATE #2] Other things I just tried: So long ago I had moved my Downloads folder to a different, larger capacity drive and then created a symbolic link to it from my user directory in my OS drive. For most intents and purposes this works fine. When I removed the link folder in my user directory and created a regular Downloads folder, Airdrop no longer fails on my iPhone when transferring a file. It acts like it sent it successfully but, I get no notification on my Mac and the file still can't be seen in the Downloads folder.

I then created a new Downloads folder in my non-OS drive, moved everything over to it from the old Downloads folder and then recreated the symbolic link to it in my OS drive. iPhone thinks its sent the photo w/out fail, the Downloads folder bounces on my Dock, but still no file in the folder. So pretty much back to square one.
