Every time I try to adjust the start of the effect it jumps to the beginning of the image or clip. It has been working fine for most of this project except for when i had transitions in place, but know it does it all the time. I assume that i hit a key by accident and changed a setting.

i've made it all the way through this video and was almost finished when this started happening. When i was working on this video the last 2 days i was able to see the image when i adjusted the start and the end of the effect. Then all of a sudden last night when went to edit the start, the image goes black, so, something changed. it's impossible to edit the start size if i can't see the image
What happens if you move the playhead a bit to be inside the image, and then adjust?
AFAICT from a quick test (as I rarely use KB) if the Start has already been selected, you can do further adjustments and the playhead doesn't seem to move.
So:
1) select the Start
2) move the playhead so you can see
3) adjust
should work.
That is just as it works.
When you click the green rectangle to adjust the start, it will move the playhead to the start.
Of course, if there is transition there, it is going to be problematic.
Most people just delete the transition and then add after adjusting the Ken Burns effect.
It hasn't been doing that during this whole project. I have been able to adjust the start and the end while being able to see the image. Why does the image disappear? Also, I don't have a transition there.
It goes black at the end of the video when you click. What are you clicking? I can’t really tell you’re doing. After you position it in the Viewer use the playback button at the top of the viewer or switch to the timeline with Cmd-2.
i went to an older version of the video to show you the difference. I am clicking on the start rectangle to adjust the size. You can see the image when i adjust it here, but on the one that i have been working on instead of the image being visible it just goes to black. https://youtu.be/4wUM2hs7zD0
I did the same thing in both videos. Select the image and then go to the crop tool and apply the Ken Burns effect. Then i either select the start or the end rectangles to adjust the effect. When i click on the start in either video it jumps to the beginning of the image clip. But if you notice, on the second video i am able to see the image in the viewer so i can see what my start crop will be. But, on the other video every time i try to adjust the start. the viewer goes black, not allowing me to see what the start crop will be. So, what i am trying to solve is why the viewer goes black.

You’re moving the start point so the playhead goes to the start of the motion. Use feedback to make a feature request, though it’s something that’s been like this in iMovie for years.
That’s not what you did in the first video. You clicked somewhere else rather than returning to the timeline. It’s really hard to follow your actions.
Try rebooting and trashing the preferences. Otherwise there may be some software conflict that’s effected it.
