If you're using Apple Mail app, start reading this support article:-> If you can’t send email on your iPhone or iPad and/or this one:--> If you can't receive email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
If the issue persists, I suggest that you delete your email account from iPhone, restart your iPhone, contact your email provider (gmail, Aol, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc, checking their outgoing/incoming parameters like SMTP or IMAP), then re-add that email account MANUALLY using these instructions:--> Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, specifically the section "How to set up your email account manually".
