Mac slow when using Mail

Hey Mac Experts,

My Mail is very, very slow. What do you think could be the reason?

It's an older MacBook Pro, from 2012, has Core i7, but it worked fine 2 months ago.

Using MacOS Mojave 10.14.6

Is there a practical limit on number of messages in a folder?

I have 50,000 in my InBox and 50,000 in another.

In a pictures folder, I have 16,000 files at 200GB. Is that a lot? I think a message popped up at one point, said I had too may files in a folder, so I created a sub-folder for some pictures.

What are reasons that Mail could be very slow, like 2 minutes when I click on a folder? Is there an Index that I could re-build or anything?

Thank you for any help!

Yes, that's lot of eMails & files, but...

First run Drive DX to get a better view of Drive health…

If that reports no problems then...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.

If still no good...

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
