Black screen after logon after updating to macOS Big Sur

Black screen after logon after updating to Big Sur.

I can logon with the guest user but only get a black screen with my user logon (which is the administrative logon). My computer is still compatible with this software. Does anyone have experience with this? Get it resolved? Thanks.

Hi mightymuffin |,

We recommend that you try the steps in the link below since your Mac starts up to a blank screen.

If your Mac starts up to a blank screen - Apple Support

To perform the recommended troubleshooting steps via the link above, complete the steps in the section titled "Try to start up from macOS Recovery."

Apple silicon
1) Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds, until you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options. Select Options, then click Continue.

2) If you never see the startup options window, release the power button, then repeat step 1.

Intel processor
1) Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds.

2) Press and release the power button, then immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R until you see an Apple logo or other image.

We recommend the steps above because they will show you what to do if your Mac appears to be stuck on a blank screen.

If you’re still experiencing the same issue, then give the steps here a try: If your Mac screen goes black - Apple Support

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Thanks for your suggestions. After trying safe boot and recovery boot modes, restarting, unplugging every extraneous device, and running first aid, the reinstalling of Big Sur failed. ( I believe It’s a corrupted OS after that last Big Sur update.)

I took the computer to an apple repair specialist with the plan to back up the files and restore the hard drive.

Hopefully, this will fix the problem and I will be more diligent to have regular backups in future.
