There are two very different kinds of storage.
Storage space on your iPhone is fixed. It cannot be increased.
Storage on iCloud can be expanded if you need more room for your backups and other data.
If you are seeing a message that the phone cannot be updated because there is not enough storage, you will need to start deleting apps, messages, photos, music, video and other data that you no longer need in order to create more space on the phone.
