People album slow to display

Hi,

My photo library is stored on an external SSD.

When Photos launches, it does so quite quickly, about 2-3 seconds with over 75K photos and videos

When I click on the People album, however, is takes about 30 seconds every time to populate the people thumbnails and I get the beachball.

Once I'm there, images open quickly etc.

I've tried repairing my photo library, restarting the Mac, force quitting and so on to no avail.

I should also point out that it is not still scanning faces, or at least it does not say it is anymore.

Does anyone have an idea what might be going on?

Thanks!

Hi,

I did that actually but to no avail.

So since that and repairing the library did not speed things up, I tried something bit more radical: I created a completely new and empty photo library, then downloaded the entire library from iCloud, about 800GB.

Alas, it did not speed up the People album.

Same behavior as before - when I click on People, I get the beachball and ~30 seconds later the people thumbnails load.

The large slideshow image just shows gray and the person's name.

If I click on play the slideshow, it actually plays it and when I stop it, the gray card with the name reappears.

Other than this behavior, Photos works fine.

There is no delay wen clicking on any photos or other albums, just the People one.

It's rather annoying and I just don't understand that.

Now, since creating the library from scratch on the Mac, I can say there is one other anomaly I can't explain, the counts are different on my iPhone, Mac Mini and in iCloud:

Phone: 68,831 photos, 6,770 videos

Mac: 68,832 photos, 6,770 videos

iCloud: 68,828 photos, 6,770 videos

What is really weird is there are 4 more photos on the Mac than in iCloud, even though the Mac downloaded all its photos from iCloud into the new, empty library I mentioned before via Settings/iCloud "download originals to this Mac".

*sigh*

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Hi,

The numbers above are for "All Photos" on both the Mac and iPhone. The iCloud count is the only number I can find on the site.

Note, the count got bumped up by 2 in some of the screenshots as I temporarily added the iPhone screenshots to the library. After deleting, they are back exactly to the numbers above.

No photos show referenced nor unable to upload to iCloud. That was my initial thought as well but besides the fact there are no such photos, it didn't explain why a brand new, empty library would have any such photos to begin with. So it seemed a dead-end.

And no, we have not enabled Shared iCloud Library. We're still on the fence about it...
