You appear to have been misled. Both the HP LaserJet Pro M404n and HP LaserJet Pro M405n are AirPrint-enabled devices.

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac - Apple Support

It states the software is available from Apple, but after the computer tries to locate it I get an error message that says "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
