Why is BMI not automatically calculated in Health-app?

I’ve not found a good answer yet to this question of why the BMI (body mass index) is not automatically calculated in the Health app of Apple.

It does not sound as rocket science to me, because all the information is in the app already:

  • my age,
  • my weight
  • and my height.

Why does the health app not ‘by itself’ plot a line of BMI, based on for example new weight updates etcetera??

The Health app should be seen as the main app for all your data that all other apps and devices collect, not so much as a standalone app that tracks everything automatically.

Apple Health only tracks the things it can measure, via other apps or devices. For example, sound dB via AirPods, steps tracked by the accelerometer sensor in the iPhone. If you want to track, for example, your BMI, you must download one of the apps offered in the BMI category and track it in them. The data will then be mirrored in the Health app. You can also look for a Smart Weight which, in addition to your weight, can also measure BMI. This will still require a 3rd party app that can store the BMI from the weight, and then display it in Health.

Thanks for your reply. And I see what you mean with the input from third-party apps to the health app.

Though, I have enough apps on my phone and it feels a bit overkill to install yet another app, while all the ingredients te for the BMI calculation is already available in the health app: age-weight-height.

Anyway, the positive thing about the BMI section in the Health app is that if you click +add. That it DOES do a proposal/suggestion of the current BMI, based on the available data.

So I just have to remind tapping the Add button every once in a while and save that outcome to see a plotted line emerging 😊

oh.. and by the way; the health app ‘itself’ does track the number of stairs and steps and kilometers I walk during a day. Not as precise as when using a smartwatch, but a good enough estimate for my use. So I dare to have a different opinion that the health app only mirrors third-party input 😉

have a great day!
