time machine no longer backing up on 13.2.1 M2 Pro

Been through hours of tech support no solution.

brand new M2 Pro running 13.2.1 using Samsung T7 2TB ssd for time machine backups. Nothing else on the external drive, loads of space (1.5 TB free), formatted APFS correctly, first aid shows no issues, have wiped and retried multiple times, wiped and used Time Machine to back up on identical different machine and worked fine.

Time machine performed initial backup fine, updated hourly for 2 weeks, and will no longer back up.

Is very slow, bogs down, stalls out somewhere between 57% and 65% and will not progress no matter how long (days) I leave it.

Apple support has no ideas for me. Can anyone help?

Curious to know if any format was applied to the new external drive,

or if macOS was allowed to put whatever it wanted there, instead.

Sometimes those details can be important; as these newer Mac's OS

have different rules and higher level security. Also some parts of the

System are highly protected from incursions, compared to older Macs.

I've been outdoors here trying to de-ice solidly frozen rain gutters;

from step ladder on uneven terrain.. I'm indoors to get warm, and

also get another pair of dry gloves, since removing broken icy bits

from the gutter, gets my gloves soaked. And hands get froze, too.

So it's time to go back out there for a few hours, & focus on this section

that's still a problem all winter. The rain gutters are a big mistake here in

an urban area, where building zones are not correct for AK geography..

[A hot fire would melt the ice OK, but might be structurally problematic.]

Sorry to not have much newer information beyond what's already said.

sounds frosty! Appreciate your time.

The drive was set up by Time Machine (apfs - I have tried encrypted and non-encrypted). The key piece is that the same drive used the same way on literally the exact same machine (a buddy bought his the same day as me same specs) did produce flawless TM functionality, the only difference being that his rig is running 13.2 and mine is running 13.2.1

To be clear, when I take this drive and walk over to his computer, let time machine reformat it the same way, and do a backup, it works fine. Take it back to mine, same steps, backup is slow and eventually stops somewhere in the 57-65% range and never completes the backup.

thanks for your advice regardless! Much appreciated

Cut your time and frustation cost and just get a Crucial X8 portable SSD (1050 MB/s) formatted to APFS which is what I use exclusively for TM backups on macOS 11.7.4/12.6.3/13.2.1. There is a $10 - $40 sale on these drives thru Mar 11. I am using these

There have been years of people reporting issues with Samsung T5 and T7 drives which means it cannot just be you, and hence my first paragraph recommendation.
