Mac Ventura file sharing stopped working

I have file sharing enabled on my new Mac Air with Ventura and when it was first enabled, with the Downloads folder shared, it was working fine. Suddenly however it’s stopped being accessible. All the settings still look fine and I haven't changed any password etc.

Another strange occurrence though is that in trying to solve this I found I can’t turn file sharing off under System Settings -> General. The slider refuses to turn off. I also can’t delete the shared folder, it goes through the actions but doesn’t delete.

I even unloaded and reloaded the Samba daemon in terminal but it’s still not working nor can I turn it off in Settings. Does anyone know why or have had similar problems?

Hi DazzAU,

A great first step in isolating software-based concerns on your Mac is to test the behavior in safe mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac outlines the specific to perform that test depending on your model.

Once completed, that article offers further steps based up on the results to further troubleshoot potential causes for for the noted behavior.

Regards.

DazzAU,

Is the Mac's built-in Firewall currently enabled? If so, try disabling this temporarily to see if that has helped out.

This page can help provide info on that process, if needed: Block connections to your Mac with a firewall - Apple Support

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Network  in the sidebar, then click Firewall. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Turn off Firewall.

Cheers.

After a lot of trial and error and deleting of all settings under File Sharing I've found:

  • when the file share is first configured it places a user called Documents (being the name of the folder I'm sharing) in the users column with permissions of "Custom" - I have to change this to Read & Write
  • it then works
  • However, if I reboot the Macbook it then DOESN'T work and I have to delete all the settings again, reboot and re-configure and it will again work.....ad infinitum

I think I'll just live without file sharing until/if/when Apple fix this.

Yep, tried that and also deleting all the settings and re-doing them. Still doesn't work. Eveything else in the article is just boilerplate so on a new machine I'm not going to go through a re-install.

I would think there would be logging somewhere that I could review to see if the Mac was listening or mishandling the connection attempt?

Actually I just remembered how to access system logs in MacOS so I'll see what's in there.

I just ran in to the same problem. I connect to a shared folder on my Mac Mini M1 from my Macbook Pro M1 and after upgrading to Ventura, My Mac Mini will show up in the network but I can't connect to it.

I was able to get it working again (for now) by turning off file sharing in settings. I also had the issue that the slider didn't move to show it had been turned off, but I could see the icon for the MAc Mini disappear on the Macbook pro so I knew it was turned off. I turned it back on and all is working again for now. Appears to be a glitch from the upgrade, but who knows.

I think I isolated my problem. After upgrading, every time I used Adobe Lightroom Classic my file sharing would quit. I keep my photos on an external drive on my Mac Mini M1 so this is an issue when I am using my M1 Macbook Pro. I stopped using Lightroom and my file sharing is working properly with no issues. Might be an issue where Lightroom needs to be upgraded by Adobe.
