When I checked for the specific speaker for the problem by moving the sound balance from left to right, it became evident that this cracking sound is coming from the left speaker. Hmm sounds like it's possible it could be a hardware issue....

Does it happen in safe mode? How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Does this issue happen when playing audio from other application like playing music in the music app or playing a youtube video in safari?
